Si Pitung

Si Pitung was a 19th century inhabitant of Jakarta. In the Indonesian folklore he is compared to Robin Hood. Therefore several films have been made about him. According to the Dutch he was a pirate.

Si Pitung was born in Marunda (Cilincing, North Jakarta). As a child he learned the local martial arts, called silat. The Dutch needed a lot of effort to catch him but eventually captain Hinne was able to kill him in an ambush. He is buried in a tomb in het harbour of Tanjung Priok.

A lot of legends have evolved about him. He would have been a magician who was immune for bullets. Therefore captain Hinne would have used golden bullets.

In 2010 riots broke out when the city announced plans to move the tomb of Si Pitung.
